About as far south in Florida as you can get without being in the Florida Keys, Biscayne National Park is a rarity in that it is mostly water. This fact is reflected by the park's boat tours -- only one of which uses a boat merely as a vehicle for reaching and exploring sights on land. All the others place the park's underwater world front and center, from its mangroves to its coral reefs.
The aquatic reserve part of the park extends well into the northern reaches of Biscayne Bay, stopping just south of Key Biscayne. That places the waters of the park within plain sight of the downtown Miami waterfront, while the park's main visitor center is about 25 miles away. Two of these tours are snorkeling tours, and the snorkeling gear is included. One tour visits the waters outside the park's mangrove preserve; the other explores the coral fringing reefs along the park's barrier islands and finger channels. The other group tours, which use a glass-bottom boat, visit the lighthouse and wildlife preserve at Boca Chita Island. The company also recommends bringing a pull-over or jacket, or something else warm to wear, since wind chill lowers the temperature on the boat by as much as 20 degrees Fahrenheit.
The wind chill makes warm clothing even more essential during the winter months. According to the National Park Service, Biscayne National Park is home to species of fish, and many of these are visible to snorkelers and visitors on the glass-bottom boat tour.
On the sandy bottom of the bay, you might see rays and flounder. Along the corals, eels, batfish, colorful sergeant majors and spiny scorpionfish and lionfish abound.
