Nilanjana may seem like an ordinary girl from a Bengali family but her dreams and hopes are much bigger than what Kolkata can offer. She soon embarks on a journey that takes her to the City of Paris.

However, this is not an intentional journey. She moves to Paris with her husband, Kishanlal, who owns a restaurant. Despite having all the luxuries, Nilanjana feels trapped in her apartment and within her marriage. She is treated less as an individual and more as an object of sexual pleasure. She is reduced to a caretaker of the apartment.

She finds herself wishing for ways to make her life more fulfilling. She leaves her marriage and moves in with Danielle, a lesbian. Her relationship with Danielle is similar to her previous marriage with Kishanlal, where she is treated more like a sexual object.

She meets Benoir Dupont on the plane back to Paris from Kolkata and he introduces her to the art, culture and food of Paris. Soon Nilanjana discovers liberation through her sexual encounters with Dupont. She understands the need to fulfill her own desires. However, this extra-marital affair ends abruptly when Nilanjana realizes that Dupont is not a selfless lover.

In her journey to discover herself, she learns from Dupont to love herself most and encounters various incidents that finally help her attain her freedom. The author, through French Lover, tries to showcase the life of a woman trapped in a typical marriage within the patriarchal norms and the ways in which she is able to liberate herself from these social chains.

Instead it blew open the concept of being an Indian woman in Western society, but made sure never to victimise the main character Nila. I liked that since Indian literature has a tendency to glorify and exoticise, whereas this writer shows us a well rounded woman who can be weak but is only out to see who she really is.

There are the other victimised characters in the novel, in the shape of Nila's mother who dies and her friend who commits suicide, yet the writer does not get overly sentimental, choosing instead to show what is behind their deaths. Though it was a bit stilted in places, perhaps due to the translation, it was an enjoyable read. See all 1 customer reviews. There's a problem loading this menu right now. French Lover A novel by Taslima Nasrin. French Lover is the story of Nilanjana, a young Bengali woman from Kolkata who moves to Paris after getting married to Kishanlal, a restaurant owner. Kishanlal's luxurious apartment seems to be a gilded cage for Nilanjana, and she feels stifled within its friendless confines. Her marriage, where she functions as little more than a housekeeper and sex object, is far from fulfilling and Nilanjana desperately looks for a way out of the boredom and depression that threaten to engulf her.

It is at this point that she meets Benoir Dupont, a blond, blue-eyed handsome Frenchman, and is swept off her feet. Benoir introduces Nilanjana to the streets, cafes and art galleries of Paris. In her passionate, sexually liberating relationship with Benoir, she finally begins to have an inkling of her own desires.

The relationship ends when Nilanjana realises that Benoir's first priority is himself and not the woman he loves, and that her need for him has ended. But her road to self-discovery has only just begun. Bold in concept and powerful in execution, French Lover is a fascinating glimpse into the workings of a woman's mind as she struggles to come to terms with her identity in a hostile world.
