The diagram shows two 22 springs so that was what I ordered. I'm guessing it uses two springs for added tension. Seems like they should have just used one spring that had more tension. Maybe they figured they could make more money by selling two springs instead of one. I had a drs appointment today so wasn't able to get the engine started yet. Looks like the weather will be nice tomorrow so I'll get it running and check the drive system out further.

Just a note of more explanation about where I found the broken spring. It was not under the battery compartment. It was hooked at the front of the compartment attached to the compartment housing. The two 22 springs were missing and the rod is loose. I still have the original part on order, but for now this spring will work. I also had to take the carburetor apart and clean it. The jets were clogged and the needle valve was frozen solid. I had to pry it out. The electric shut-off selenoid was also stuck. After a thorough cleaning all parts worked fine and the engine cranked. Then the two blade spindles were frozen up. Put new oil back in So I completely remove the tranaxle and open it up We did not completely disasseble the transmission because we didn't want to destroy it. I think it has something to do with the neutral actuator or maybe when I purged the tractor I didn't get all the air out.

With the engine OFF,look under the tractor,at the left side of the trans. Loosen the bolt,and slide it,in the slot,to adjust to a neutral setting. Because of the tension change when you replace lawn mower belts, it is always recommended to check all drive adjustments after changing the drive belts. With the parking brake still engaged remove the cotter pin from the ferrule on the top side of the variable speed pulley bracket.

Disconnect the ferrule from the bracket. If you need to make an adjustment there will be tension on the linkage and the resulting friction will cause resistance as you slide out the ferrule.

Thread the ferrule up or down the rod until the post fits in the hole without any resistance. Put the cotter pin back through the hole in the ferrule on the top side of the variable speed pulley bracket. Again, with the parking brake engaged, remove the cotter pin that secures the ferrule in the latch assembly. Disconnect the linkage from the latch assembly. Adjust the ferrule with a new cotter pin as you did in Step Secure the ferrule with a new cotter pin and test the operation of the linkage.

Put the cutting deck back in place under the mower as outlined in your owner's manual. Just follow the cutting deck removal instructions in reverse order. Opposite of when you removed the battery, connect the red positive battery cable to the positive battery terminal first.

Start the unit and check that all linkage and related safety features are operating correctly before returning the mower to full operation.
