I heard you yelling at the television.
- With the Twins clinging to a lead over the Oakland Athletics, the bullpen imploded again, this time with usually reliable reliever Taylor Rogers blowing a save in the top of the ninth inning en route to a deflating loss.
I heard you yelling at the television. The Twins disappointed you again, swept by the Yankees in the Division Series in the usual infuriating fashion. You thought this would be different. The wins. The Bombas. Every baseball writer I talked to over two days in Minneapolis, from the national types to the Yankee beat regulars, expected a more competitive Division Series than the sorry history suggested.
The consensus: This was going four games, maybe five. None called a Yankees sweep. They were as stunned as the rest of us. So how did we get this so wrong? The everyday lineup was much more banged up than the Twins let on.
And the Yankees, who led MLB in players on the injured list and man-games lost, entered postseason healthier than any point since April. Also: two key lineup decisions by rookie manager Rocco Baldelli blew up in his face: Starting a hobbled Luis Arraez over a healthy Jonathan Schoop at second base, then sticking with late-season callup Randy Dobnak to start Game 2 after a come-from-ahead loss in Game 1. The Twins chose offense over defense with the rookie Arraez, a contact machine who batted a team-leading.
But his lack of mobility on a sprained right ankle proved troublesome at critical times. Later in that inning he bounced a throw on a potential double play that first baseman C. The Twins never led again in the series. Sometimes a young, unproven arm surprises in the postseason. Dobnak got only six outs before leaving with the bases loaded in the third. A seven-run inning followed as the bullpen failed for the second straight game. Arraez swung and missed fewer pitches than any hitter in baseball 2.
The Twins felt Arraez put so much stress on opposing pitchers that it bolstered the rest of their lineup. We were really reluctant to have that player sitting on the sidelines in a short series. After this, if you were him, why would you stay?
The left ankle Eddie Rosario sprained in June never quite healed, affecting his base-running and defense. So what now?
Levine metaphorically hinted at a much more active winter for the Twins. Odorizzi, Kyle Gibson and Pineda are free agents. Expect the Twins to re-sign Odorizzi and possibly Pineda, then go hunting for starting pitching.
And the Twins boast enough position-player and prospect depth to acquire a starter like Noah Syndergaard of the Mets without gutting their roster. Graterol, 21, missed more than two months with a right shoulder impingement and has never thrown more than innings in a season.
Baldelli said he may ask Buxton to play a deeper center field to limit those full-speed wall collisions leading to injuries. The Twins need to sign some starting pitching so that Kyle Gibson never, ever pitches for them again.
Ulcerative colitis is a serious but very treatable disease. Kyle has been very good when healthy. His mistake, common to many big-league players, has been trying to play through his symptoms. Kyle Gibson has been mediocre to bad his entire career. His illness just took him another step down. I send my congratulations to the Twins on an outstanding regular season!
And, with the major exception of the Minnesota Lynx, winners of the WNBA title in , , , and , I send my condolences to Minnesota professional sports fans who continue to think some team will win a championship in the post-season. The Twins had a fantastic regular season but choked — big time — when it mattered most.
Same old story with the Twins……Owners will talk it up in the off season, pick up a couple of cheap mediocre starters, bluff the press into world series talk, raise prices and con the fans into the ball park for another season of final frustration……and then again counting on the passage of time and past love to do it all over again for the next year. It never ends. Tired of hearing about the starting of Dobnak in Game 2. So if they started Odorizzi in Game 2, then who do they trot out for Game 3?

The twins we at it again. You can watch Charles' whole video down below:
Sometimes, injuries force Renteria's hand. After missing the series opener Friday to rest a bruised kneecap he sustained Wednesday, Chicago third baseman Yoan Moncada figures to be back in the lineup Saturday, Renteria said. Moncada has shown success whether batting in the first two slots or the lower third of the White Sox order.
The White Sox also grew accustomed to traffic headed in Alonso's direction in the Chicago clubhouse. Right-hander Ivan Nova , 5. Nova is with an 8. The Twins placed slugging outfielder Eddie Rosario on the injured list due to a sprained left ankle. Rosario was hurt while running the bases during Wednesday during a home victory against the Tampa Bay Rays.
He leads the club with 20 home runs and 60 RBIs. Minnesota activated infielder Ehire Adrianza , who had been on the injured list because of abdominal issues.
Adrianza had two hits and a walk Friday in the series opener, a White Sox win. The Twins arrived in Chicago for the weekend set a few hours later than expected, as Thursday's getaway day matinee lasted 18 innings in an eventual loss to the Rays.
Minnesota resolved to bounce back despite the outcome, which came nine days after the Twins secured a inning victory against the Boston Red Sox. Righty Michael Pineda , 5. Max Kepler added three hits for the Twins, including his 35th home run. Jake Cave also connected. Sano and Cave both homered twice Friday night in a loss to the Tigers, who have the worst record in the league. They kept slugging away as the Twins overcame an early deficit.
Gibson allowed the leadoff batter to reach in all six innings he pitched while receiving limited help from his defense. A fielding error by second baseman Luis Arraez led to the second of two Tigers runs in the second, and Dawel Lugo slid headfirst to score on a botched rundown in the two-run third.
Kepler's sixth leadoff homer left him two short of Brian Dozier's club record. Jackson held the Twins scoreless from there until the fifth, when Cave's leadoff double started the rally. Kepler doubled in one run and Nelson Cruz singled in another before Sano pulled Jackson's first pitch into the second deck in left, his 26th homer. I saw that pitch right down the middle and I was ready to swing.
Jackson , who has pitched for a major league record 14 teams, allowed six earned runs in five innings in his first career start at Target Field.
I take full responsibility for it. Taylor Rogers, in his first appearance since Aug. Tigers rookie shortstop and top prospect Willi Castro, called up from Triple-A Toledo earlier in the day, went 2 for 4 with a double in his major league debut. On his way to Target Field, Cruz stopped by U.
Bank Stadium to blow the Gjallarhorn before the Vikings' preseason victory over Arizona. The Gjallarhorn is enormous, but Cruz, given a personalized No. Twins All-Star pitcher Jose Berrios apologized for not speaking with reporters following Friday night's loss to Detroit, his fourth consecutive poor start this month.
Berrios , 3. Harper was with a 3. Castro is expected to start at short the rest of the season, with Jordy Mercer shifting to a utility role. Goodrum is headed to Philadelphia to be examined by Dr. Williams Meyers, a core muscle specialist. Buxton, out since Aug.

These are strange and unusual days for the Indians. There is a division race to be won, but they are not the favorites. They are not even in first place. What they are, however, is the hottest team in the majors at the moment.
Cleveland comes out of the All-Star break riding a six-game winning streak, the longest current winning streak in the majors. On June 2, Minnesota was and Cleveland was Since then, the Indians are and the Twins are But the weekend series in Cleveland is a huge one.
Minnesota last won the division in , although it did reach the postseason as a wildcard team in an win season. But the current Twins are the best team fielded by the franchise since at least that win group. Cleveland has dominated the Central Division through the years.
They have won the division in each of the last three years. Going back to , they have won the division 10 times in 23 years, including a five-year run from The Indians have not just won their division during that span, they have dominated the division. They have won those 10 division titles by a combined games. That includes the AL champions that went in a strike-shortened year, and won the division by a whopping 30 games, which is still a major league record.
Since the start of three-division play, the Indians or the Twins have won the Central Division 16 times in 23 years. One of them, obviously, will win it again this year. Francona said he feels good about where his team is now after an up-down-up first half. After going in April the Indians struggled in May , but have rebounded in June and July, and will go into the Minnesota series with a six-game winning streak and playing better than they have all year. That record was highlighted by an American League-record game winning streak.
The Indians went from August 24 through September 14 without losing a game. But they do need to keep piling up the wins, because while the Twins may not be as good as their start to this season, they are far better than their record since then.
The X-factor for both teams, of course, is the fast-approaching July 31 trade deadline, and what moves either or both teams make. It may be overstating it to say the team that wins the trade deadline will win the division.
