‘I’m Too Sexy’: Oral History of Right Said Fred’s Hit Song – Rolling Stone
Please refresh the page and retry. M usician, songwriter and actor Fred Fairbrass, 60, is one half of Right Said Fred, along with his older brother Richard. Fred is married to his second wife, Alex, with whom he has a daughter, Marina. He splits his time between Barcelona and Berkshire.
My parents instilled in us the importance of being punctual. We grew up in East Grinstead, Sussex. Dad was a printer and he came from a long line of printers. My dad was cynical about anything vaguely authoritarian, so we definitely got that from him. From 10 or 11, I had a paper round and at 15 I started working in a record shop before moving to Topshop in London, while Richard collected bottles in a pub. I went to a school gig and saw I was the only bloke there among all the girls, so I thought those were good odds.
I started playing guitar, mostly self-taught, when I was 13, and writing song lyrics came naturally. W e started touring in the late Seventies with Joy Division and moved to London in when I was In a sea of post-punk new wave music, we were a quirky pop band with progressive rock influences. Y es, all the time. It was only when we got picked up by EMI America while playing in New York in that we knew the music we were doing was good enough.
Even our agent sacked us because he thought the album was dreadful. So we self-published and self-funded, and have done so ever since, bar a small blip in It was the best decision of our career as it meant we had total control. H owever, we got our break when a friend of a friend got in contact with Simon Bates, who had the biggest show on Radio 1. When we re-signed to our original record label in The deal came crashing down when the label became insolvent. A Ford Fiesta, would you believe? Both Richard and I bought in Fulham, and the market was very good to us. But not so good when the recession hit and the label fell apart at the same time. The bank we were with was unbelievably predatory and horrible. A modelling agency in the late Nineties. We got ripped off and lost a lot of money, but it served us right, really. V ery. I pay all our bills and all the invoices come straight to me. When you run a small ship, you have to be mindful. When a bill comes in, I pay it.
You need that safety net. We have a small portfolio and an investment manager who oversees it for us. It also financed our new album and tour. I think our new album, Exactly!
