Tylenol active ingredient pregnancy-10 Over-the-Counter Drugs to Avoid During Pregnancy - Consumer Reports

Facing a world full of potential dangers for the babies they carry, pregnant women hear regularly that acetaminophen can be trusted to reduce fevers and relieve aches and pains without causing harm to a developing fetus. Acetaminophen is the active ingredient in Tylenol and Panadol and is also a component of Excedrin, among other common pain relievers. The latest study, published Monday by the journal JAMA Pediatrics, does not establish that prenatal exposure to acetaminophen caused the observed increase in diagnosed hyperactivity disorders, prescriptions for ADHD medications, or emotional problems in children reported by parents. But the research was designed to avoid many of the pitfalls of studies that find an association between an environmental exposure and the appearance of a specific outcome many years later. The new findings are based on more than 64, Danish mothers and their children.

Fifty-three percent of pregnant women in the study reported using acetaminophen in the first 18 weeks. Part of the pregnancy journey is experiencing changes in our bodies, including accompanying aches and pains.

Though for years, moms-to-be have been told that Tylenol during pregnancy is OK for treating fever or pain, a new study reveals a link between the popular pain med and future behavioral issues in offspring. In a study conducted by the University of Bristol in United Kingdom and the Cardiff University School of Medicine in Wales, researchers found a link between a pregnant woman's use of Tylenol during pregnancy and the likelihood of her child developing behavioral problems, hyperactivity and emotional issues.

Acetaminophen, also known as paracetamol, is a pain reliever and fever reducer and is the active ingredient in many over-the-counter and prescription medicines, including Tylenol. To conduct the study, researchers examined the use of Tylenol during pregnancy by approximately 7, women and their partners at 18 and 32 weeks of pregnancy who took part in a longitudinal study via survey.

By the time their children were age 7, mothers were again surveyed about acetaminophen use as well as their children's behavioral issues. Controlling for factors that might also cause behavioral problems in kids, such as smoking, alcohol use, socioeconomics and genetics, researchers found an association between acetaminophen use and behavior problems.

Results showed that women who took the drug at 18 weeks 53 percent of participants and 32 weeks 42 percent of participants of pregnancy had higher odds of having a child who would later develop conduct problems and hyperactivity, and those who took acetaminophen at 32 weeks had greater odds of their child developing emotional problems.

Also, the risk appears stronger in the third trimester than the second, which suggests the brain is more sensitive to acetaminophen exposure during certain periods. Even so, researchers aren't suggesting that all pregnant women toss out their Tylenol, since the study only suggests a link between behavioral problems and acetaminophen use, not a causal relationship. Just 5 percent of kids studied actually ended up developing behavioral issues, so the overall risk is deemed small.

Plus, researchers admit that the study had some limitations and that further research is needed to explain the link. For example, the women studied did not report on the dosage of acetaminophen they took or reasons for use.

It is worth noting, however, that prior studies of pregnant women taking Tylenol during pregnancy have indicated higher risk for ADHD , autism, asthma and other problems in offspring.

Evie Stergiakouli, lead author of the study and a researcher in genetic epidemiology and statistical genetics at the University of Bristol, told ABC News. View the discussion thread. Skip to main content. Follow us email facebook twitter pinterest instagram youTube rss.

Acetaminophen use during pregnancy linked to ADHD risk, experts question study results - CNN

CNN Long-term use of acetaminophen during pregnancy was associated with twice the risk of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in children, according to a study published Monday in the journal Pediatrics.

However, two experts believe that the data do not support these findings. Chat with us in Facebook Messenger. Find out what's happening in the world as it unfolds. More Videos Acetaminophen safe for pregnant women? Story highlights Researchers collected data from about 95, mothers with children born between and Long-term acetaminophen use in pregnancy is related to more than a twofold increase in risk for ADHD in children The data does not support their conclusions, other experts say.

Acetaminophen, also known as paracetamol, is the active ingredient in Tylenol and hundreds of over-the-counter and prescription medicines, according to the US Food and Drug Administration. However, pregnant women who require "continuous acetaminophen for a longer period" should consult with their physicians, he wrote in an email. The study defines a longer period as 29 days or more. ADHD , a neurodevelopmental disorder, can cause inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity.

The causes are unknown but research is ongoing and genetics are believe to play a role. Women were invited to participate after routine ultrasound examinations around week 18 of their pregnancies. Information was gathered from 95, mothers, 75, fathers and , children born between and -- including 2, children diagnosed with ADHD. Use of acetaminophen by pregnant women for less than seven days was associated with a decreased risk of ADHD in offspring, the researchers say, based on their analysis.

Fathers who used the pain reliever for 29 or more days prior to conception also had twice the number of children with ADHD. How fever in early pregnancy can cause birth defects. Still, they believe further study is needed. Alison G. Cahill, a member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists' Committee on Obstetric Practice, said the study "doesn't add anything to our medical knowledge.

She applauds the researchers for their efforts -- in particular the high number of participants -- but says the study simply cannot "overcome" certain challenges and design flaws. Chief among these is the way in which a diagnosis of ADHD is assessed, she said. Ideally, the same careful and measured approach would be used with all the children in the study. Instead, the researchers calculated the number of children diagnosed with ADHD by codes in their medical records.

Acetaminophen during pregnancy may increase risk of hyperactivity in kids. Also, variability between providers and how they make that assessment means it is possible a child didn't have ADHD but instead had a related disorder.

Wiznitzer, who also did not participate in the new research, noted that the codes the researchers used to calculate the total number of ADHD diagnoses may have merged in learning and language disorders. And past telephone surveys conducted in the US have asked parents whether their child was ever diagnosed with ADHD and then whether the child still has that diagnosis.

This lowball estimate would explain the twofold increase in risk the researchers found. By that standard, children must show symptoms, both inattention and hyperactivity, before age 7. It is a more rigorous standard than the one commonly used in the US, he said. Cahill said that when linking a prenatal exposure to a certain outcome, scientists would expect to see certain things if the "association is actually true. Previous studies have shown an association at times, and at other times, they've shown none, she explained.

This too was not seen in the new study. Study: Acetaminophen reduces not only pain, but pleasure, too. At low doses, acetaminophen reduces risk of ADHD in offspring, while at high doses, the reverse is true. The researchers also didn't measure the amount of acetaminophen taken or levels of biomarkers; they used a survey in which patients self-reported the number of days.

That is "not informative from a scientific perspective," she said. Finally, the numbers don't add up to a statistical significance as the authors imply, she said. Wiznitzer agreed that "the numbers here don't support the conclusion. Wiznitzer also noted that, since the study began at 18 weeks into each pregnancy, mothers and partners had to recall their use of acetaminophen from months earlier.

Acetaminophen is usually prescribed for only short periods during pregnancy, so Wiznitzer wondered, "Who during pregnancy would have all these pain complaints that they would be taking pain medicine regularly?

I can make an argument that perhaps there's something special about that group. In their conclusion, the authors speculate about the association, and according to Wiznitzer, they quote "all this animal research. I'll guarantee these rodents are not getting the type of dose like you would take if you're pregnant. An example of this is thalidomide , a sedative prescribed in the s for morning sickness; later, it was found to cause birth defects.

Cahill, who is also chief of maternal fetal medicine at Washington University in St. Louis, said some untreated symptoms during pregnancy can have "negative impacts" on the unborn baby. Doctors are trained to read medical studies and decide whether the results need to be followed when treating patients.

Wiznitzer said "acetaminophen serves a practical purpose in pregnancy.
